Portage Shooting: Police Identify Suspect After Man Shot

January 8, 2017-Portage Police say they have identified a suspect in  a shooting in the 1700 block of Lincoln Street which occurred yesterday.  According to the release from Portage Police Chief Troy Williams,

“At approximately 12:24 p.m. on January 7, 2017 the Portage Police responded to a suspicious vehicle call in the 1700 block of Lincoln Street in Portage. While enroute the witness advised he believed he heard a gunshot and observed a light blue SUV drive away from the scene with multiple subjects inside. The witness followed the vehicle into Gary, Indiana where he eventually lost sight of it. When Officers arrived on scene they located a white male subject (20 years of age) at 1797 Lincoln Street who had been shot in the abdomen region. Our Officers applied pressure to the wound to stop the bleeding and once the Portage Fire Department arrived on scene they transported the victim to Northlake Methodist in Gary.  The victim was later taken into surgery.”

Officers later located and impounded a vehicle which they say was used in the drive-by shooting.  Chief Williams states “We have at least one suspect identified at this time, but no arrests have been made at this time.” Police stress that they believe this to be strictly an isolated incident and thus the residents of Portage should not be overly concerned.

If anyone has any information they can provide about this incident or possible suspects please contact Captain Joe Reynolds at 219-764-5704 or you can message us on the Portage Police Department Facebook page.
