A video appeared on Youtube today purportedly showing a Hammond Police Officer abusing his department K9.  As soon as word reached Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr, he took immediate action.  The Mayor issued the following statement in response to the video:

Anybody who loves dogs as much as I do is always saddened and shocked anytime you hear of a dog's abuse. When you find out it happened with an employee of yours, it makes it that much more shocking and disturbing.  Please know that the Hammond PD does not condone that type of behavior of any of it's officers, nor is it tolerated in this administration.

The officer in question is being placed on Administrative Leave immediately, pending a further investigation.  He will have his canine removed from his control during this leave while the PD further investigates this matter.

  • I listened to the interview with Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr.regarding this incident. Just like most politicians he was more angry with person who shot the video for exposing the incident and cursing. He was more concerned with the negative publicity then about the incident and he was angry at the people who were complaining about the treatment of the dog. He stated why don’t people get more upset about other issues like an example of children who died in a fire. People probably should be concerned about many issues including children and slumlords but what does that have to do with exposing animal abuse. One is Cancer the other is Parkinson’s. What I’m saying is they are both sicknesses which need attention. If people chose to bring attention to one issue or the other then that is still a positive change. I’m thankful that social media like Facebook help citizens expose injustice in a way that makes people with power pay attention. I personally love the fact that almost every person walks around with the ability to document cruelty and injustice at a moments notice. It helps to keep people honest and doing the right thing because you never know who is watching.

First off, let me say this. I’ve held actual K9 positions from being a handler, trainer, trainer of trainers, kennel master and trainer of kennel masters for the DoD Military Working Dog program. I will extend am open invite to the Mayor, Governor and Police Chief to discuss this manner at length which I won’t do here due to the EMOTIONAL, not COGNITIVE responses. I will just say this as far as this article and officer is concerned, he should not be fired, he should NOT face disciplinary action and if anybody would like to discuss this at length as to why, Email me at m_faubus@yahoo.com if you would like a quick education on training these partners.

  • This man should be charged and arrested for assault on an officer of the law.

  • You don’t know what your looking at and are basing opinions based on emotions. Owning a dog doesn’t make you an expert on K9 handling.

Read the comments by ACTUAL K9 handlers on this:

Of course training and expertise probably wont matter to the people who “know what they see”….

  • damn hope that pig get terminated and jailed! If we abuse K-9, we would be charged for abusing a fellow officer so it’s the same thing if that pig abuse the dog.
I won’t be surprised that that pig will have his hands slapped and reinstate him back to duty and act like nothing happens. This always happens with all those dirty cops! Mayor, I hope you TERMINATED his ass!

  • Hey folks, the K9 being used is a dual purpose patrol & narcotic K9 in this case the dog was use in a narcotic detection mode. Typically the dog is rewarded with a toy or a towel that has the scent of a narcotic on it, the dog alerts on a scent and sits the handler then rewards the dog with a toy, it’s a game with the dog.

It appears in video the dog has gotten a hold of the drug and the handler is trying to get it, at the beginning of the video the handler is seem utilizing a method to open the dogs mouth to get the drugs outs then he resorted to other steps to get the dog to release the drug. Toward the end when the dog is released, the officer is seen picking up the item on the ground.

I will tell you this, my dog loved his narcotic towel so much, and loved tug-a-war with it, he could be picked up by the towel and spun around with it and never break his bite grip.

I will say their are bad handlers out there, but most handlers love their dog more than anything, I will bet you the handler was trying to get the nasty drug out of the dogs mouth, and may have saved the dogs life.

I think some on here are judging without all the knowledge of K9 handling. I believe the officer will be cleared of any wrong doing.

Repeatedly spamming with the same comment, doesn’t make you right. It just makes you look like an abuser, desperately trying to justify your actions.

  • I just saw a bunch of guys whipping horses at the Kentucky Derby. Where is the outrage?

    • I don’t know. Why don’t you grow skin as thick as a horse hide, whip yourself, then go hang your dumbass self. You will then have answered your own question, and the world will be a better place. Two birds with one stone, good thing you have other people to think for you so you don’t have to do it yourself huh?

  • So, another vacation then for an abuser? Ahh the life of a cop.

      • The technique you refer to is choking the dog out. You can choke a dog out by lifting his front legs off the ground closing the wind pipe , but you leave the dogs rear legs on the ground supporting the weight. You NEVER hang a dog with its full weigh dangling off his cervical vertebrae. This can seriously injury the dog. Also a German Shepard weighs between 70 – 80lbs. It takes 70lbs of pressure to crush a trachea. This is horrible dog handling and this officer should not be allowed to handle k-9s ever again.

  • The Northwest Indiana Gazette should be ashamed of itself for feeding the Facebook Frenzy this has become. Where are your “articles” now supporting this police officer who was training his dog the way he was taught to train it? Where are your “articles” demanding Mayor McDermitt reinstate this officer and demanding he offer an apology? Where are your articles now saying “maybe we were wrong” by not waiting or maybe even asking a professional K-9 handler to assess the video for an opinion. It seems now that you are not “the people’s” news source like you professed before. You’re just like the others. Shame on you for pandering to sensationalism.

    • I have seen many professional handlers weigh in on this and they said he should not of been handling the dog that way. In fact most say that. So which do you think is correct??

  • He should at least be charged with battery to a police officer…the dog is a police officer remember…

  • This officer should be fired and charged with animal cruelty!! There is no investigating here its on camera!! He has no business being a law enforcement officer of any kind..

  • As a certified dog trainer and behaviorist, I can tell you that compulsion training, aversive conditioning and other harsh training/punishment techniques have been scientifically proven to be physically and psychologically damaging to a dog. In this case, it is obvious that the officer cannot properly handle this dog – clearly indicated by his actions in lifting the dog by his leash/collar off of the ground. This can not only cause physical damage to the dog, but can actually contribute to the development of serious aggression issues, making the dog unpredictable and dangerous – even if the dog is trained to be aggressive for the job it’s doing. This officer should never work with dogs again.

  • This entire town should be ashamed of the Police department and the Mayor should resign immediately! Wake up and get your heads out of your butts! The officer was caught on video clearly abusing and animal and a fellow police officer…. The K9 is an officer to the public and the police force and do the right thing and d more than just take the K9 away from this thug! This is two crimes that aren’t hear say, they are on video, he needs to be fired and get jail time. Let someone from the public do something to this K9 and see what happens.

Mayor McDermott, do the right thing or resign!

    • I agree

      • Hi everyone, I watched this video and i cryed. I am a animal lover, military brat, Army Spouse ( heading to tx) lives in newport news va. I was blown away by this Police officers action with this k-9. I pray the Mayor of Hammond, takes proper action. STRANGLING, picking the K-9 up with the leash and swinging him around is ABUSE, it doesn’thave to say it, COMMON SENSE. I have been a EMT for 21 yrs, I never want harm to anyone but I am also eye for a eye kinda person. The K-9 did not look like he was doing anything wrong to receive that treatment. k-9s are police officers too……that WAS ASSUALT AND BATTERY TO ANOTHER POLICE OFFICER( not only to another police officer but to YOUR OWN PARTNER, Smh), CRUELTY TO A ANIMAL, AND JUST STUPID. That police officer doesn’t need to be a police officer nor own a mouse. MAYOR OF HAMMOND, PLEASE THIS MAN DOES NOT DESERVE HIS JOB, HE SEEMS TO BE THE ONE TO LEAVE HIS PARTNER BEHIND. THIS HAS GONE NATIONALLY AND THERE IS MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE WATCHING FOR THE DISCIPLINE THIS MAN IS GOING TO GET. PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING…NOT ONLY FOR THE K-9 (POLICE OFFICER) BUT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN HAMMOND. IF THIS POLICE OFFICER SHOWS THIS KIND OF AGGRESSION ON A ANIMAL WHAT WOULD HE DO TO A HUMAN???????? Thank god he doesn’twork for a Day care.. For the people who live in Hammond you need to voice your opinion. You live there! Sometimes i am embarrassed to be a human, a lot have no Common sense, further more on the common sense subject..its 2014 technology has gotten better and we have this equipment called a Cell phone and most have Camera’s. If people ( good people) see something not right like this police officer being abusive..they pushed one button for video. Once again common sense. Newport news police wear cameras on them. SMART ,ITS CALLED COVER YOUR AS*. I hope the K-9 gets a better handler, with respect since he may save your life one day. I am on the K-9s side and will stand my ground. I will be watching the outcome. By the way, I thought I lived in America, where i am allowed to have free speech , I know this my husband is one of many fighting for my rights. It just means if you don’t want to hear opinions , then move on, do not be apart. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE! SMH

  • The officer is unfit for this duty/privledge. Maybe a more supervised position or dismissal is necessary. Cruelty to animals, is not acceptable behavior of any LEO that truly takes the oath : “to protect and serve” .

  • JayGoldenBeach

The officer recorded (allegedly) abusing his K-9 partner should be prosecuted for Cruelty to a Law Enforcement Animal, Class A Misd. Interestingly, the law specifies a defense if the person accused of cruelty is a police officer. What kind of bollocks is that? If this cop is above the law – literally – at least fire him and revoke his Indiana state LEO certification so he can’t just move to another agency.

We the People must stop deifying police officers. There are enough Bad Apples to fill an orchard. They deserve to be held accountable for mistakes and misconduct.

The officer seen in the video is utterly dishonorable.

    • u know that any police didnt care .. police can do to people , and animals coz of police is too pround and police rules .. police didnt care i wonder how about police law and need police law … doin something … NEED POLICE LAW … i dont like cops and police im sorry i dont … i dont trust on police …. long story i got twice myself mad at cop … coz police dont care and wanna police be pround that it …

      • And hanging the dog by his collar and hitting it with his nightstick?

O wait he’s an officer so it’s ok and justified. But it’s bad if a civilian beats a dog for not letting go of a towel, or toy, or food. Yeah ok.

Obviously you need to do more training if you can’t get the dog to release. That dog is his partner, you don’t beat your partner.
