Police may have caught those responsible for a rash of armed robberies in Hessville. Social media was abuzz tonight with reports of another armed robbery. The Gazette has confirmed that a young male was robbed at gunpoint by two black males at 7:20 pm. Two cell phones were taken. The males were wearing hoodies, one grey and one black, and were described as 5 feet 7 inches tall and approximately 170 lbs as in the other reported cases. The suspects fled southbound toward the Greenbrier Apartment complex.
The phone was tracked to Oak Knoll Apartment Complex in Gary and County Police recovered the phone. At least on person is in custody as a result. Police are not releasing any details regarding the arrest but the following message, purported to be from Chief Brian Miller was posted on Facebook:
Good news!!!! We arrested two suspects tonight in the Hessville cell phone robberies. Tonight, at about 5:15pm two juveniles were robbed of their cellphones at gunpoint. The incident occurred at 173rd and Grand. Hammond Police Detectives aided by officers from the Northwest Indiana STOPS Team, captured two 17 year old Gary males at an apartment complex 4500 23rd Court in Gary. The stolen cell phones taken from the victims were recovered along with the gun used in the incident. These two are believed to be responsible for 4 or 5 other robberies in Hammond and possibly more robberies in East Chicago and Merrillville.
This marks the 5th armed robbery in Hessville involving cellular phones in the past week. The Times of Northwest Indiana reported the other four robberies earlier in the week.
